The mission of a Christian congregation is, in one sense, simple: follow Jesus; be Jesus; do what Jesus did. And yet, every congregation is gifted and shaped by the power of the Holy Spirit in unique ways that make its mission unique. The mission of a congregation is indeed to be the body of Christ in the world, but that looks different from palce to place.
The whole mission of a place is summed up as its identity in Christ. There are four aspects to that identity:
- Values - The way the congregation generally behaves as it carries out its mission - the actions you can see when the congregation is at its best.
- Beliefs - The core of the faith we turn to when times are most trying, the hour at its darkest.
- Mission Statement - A short statement of purpose that binds all together.
- Vision - What the mission looks like, what it feels like, what it is about the mission that makes us passionate about being a congregation.
